FAO: Farmed fish overtakes wild fish in global supply

Aquaculture continues to be of increasing importance in the global supply of seafood. In fact, 2014 was the first year in which the human consumption of aquaculture products exceeded that of products from wild fisheries.

According to the latest biennial food outlook report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), world aquaculture production is expected to grow by 5% during 2015 for the second year running, thereby accounting for an even larger share of the growing global supply of seafood. IUU: The war on illegal fishing continues to build momentum

Seafood products are among the most widely traded food commodities in the world, with the total commerce estimated at €130 billion per year. As the demand for healthier diets increases, the trade opportunities for fish products escalate, too.

Unfortunately, the high demand for seafood products also further incentivises illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The estimated global value of IUU fishing is thought to be between €8 and €19 billion per year. Between 11 and 26 million tonnes of fish are caught illegally a year, which corresponds to at least 15% of world catches. (more…)
