In our newsletter on Sustainable Seafood Week, we\u00a0highlighted our sustainable approach. Winning the Best Belgian Supplier\u00a0category in our sector at the MSC Sustainable Seafood Awards underscores this\u00a0once again. The awards were hosted in our country for the first time this year.The MSC awards are a boost for companies striving hard to improve their\u00a0sustainability every day. Naturally, we at Pittman Seafoods are very happy to be\u00a0recognized\u00a0in this way.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The well-known quality mark MSC has been publishing a league\u00a0table of retailers on their site for some time, primarily based on volumes and\u00a0variety. “The MSC Seafood Awards are, on the one hand, a way for us to\u00a0increase our focus, and on the other hand, a way for us to explicitly recognise\u00a0companies that are doing well. At the same time, the awards may motivate other\u00a0companies to step up their game in terms of sustainability”,\u00a0says William\u00a0Morr\u00e9, MSC\u2019s commercial manager in Belgium.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Six categories, eight winners<\/b><\/h2>\n

Belgium is the third country to host the MSC Sustainable Seafood\u00a0Awards, after the UK and Australia. In the other two countries, these awards\u00a0have become major events with more than 15 different categories. For this\u00a0inaugural event in Belgium, the MSC limited the number of categories to six.”The Belgian seafood sector is not very large, so we didn’t want to\u00a0differentiate too much. Of course, that does not mean that more categories\u00a0cannot be added in the future,” William Morr\u00e9 explains.<\/p>\n

The awards in the first four categorieswere for: best fresh-fish supermarket, best general supermarket, best national brand and best food-service restaurants. “A parallel selection methodology was used to come up with the short list. We combined objective data on volumes and range, for example, with the way that companies communicate and their approach to sustainability.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Then we submitted our long list to an independent and expert\u00a0external jury:<\/p>\n

– Hans Polet \u2013 Scientific director at ILVO, Fisheries and\u00a0Aquatic Production;<\/p>\n

– Sarah Braeye \u2013 Project coordinator of Superlijst project\u00a0at Rikolto;<\/p>\n

– Sarah Hennin \u2013 Market development manager at the\u00a0Aquaculture Stewardship Council;<\/p>\n

– Jan Kegels \u2013 Entrepreneur and business manager of Jean sur\u00a0Mer.<\/p>\n

After a preparatory round and a two-hour debate, three nominees\u00a0in each category were shortlisted.”<\/p>\n

The fifth category took major certified fish species in\u00a0Belgium as a starting point, specifically, how the linked fisheries in our country perform within the sustainability programme and how they have evolved\u00a0over the years. Here too, the expert judgement of the jury was\u00a0followed.<\/p>\n

Sustainable solutions, consistent quality<\/h2>\n

Finally, the winners in each of the first four categories\u00a0were asked to nominate their choice for the best Belgian MSC-certified\u00a0supplier. From that list, the MSC selected the three best companies in the\u00a0sixth category. Pittman Seafoods was among the companies on the short list. We\u00a0were praised first and foremost for our sustainable solutions and our positive\u00a0commercial attitude. In addition, according to the companies surveyed, our\u00a0products never sacrifice quality.<\/p>\n

“We felt it was important to also highlight this sixth\u00a0category, as suppliers are a very important catalyst in terms of\u00a0sustainability. It\u00a0came\u00a0as\u00a0no surprise\u00a0to\u00a0us that Pittman Seafoods made it into\u00a0the top three. We have a\u00a0very good cooperative relationship with them, and\u00a0we are exchanging ideas to improve the way we work on an ongoing basis”,\u00a0concludes William Morr\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Of course, at Pittman Seafoods, we are enormously proud of\u00a0this award. For that reason, we would also like to thank all the employees within\u00a0our organisation who put their shoulders to the wheel every day to achieve our\u00a0sustainability ambitions.<\/p>\n
